RHINOPLASTY - JUST WHAT'S INVOLVED WITH A NOSE CORRECTION?

If your nose is disproportionate to the size of your face, or if you have received an injury that makes it difficult to breathe, you probably have considered nose-reconstructive surgery (rhinoplasty). When evaluating the nose, surgeons divide nasal surgery into three categories:

  • Is the nose functional? Are you able to breath comfortably, or is there an obstruction?
  • Do you desire a cosmetic change? Do you want your face or profile to be more aesthetically pleasing?
  • Have you experienced a recent trauma to the nose (or have had cancer removed) that makes it advantageous for a surgeon to reconstruct the area?

How best to shape the nose requires aesthetic and practical sensibilities. Whether to turn the nose up, make it straight, narrow the tip, or change the profile—are all questions that must be taken within the context of the face and sex of the patient. Functional nasal surgery can help nasal breathing and can be performed simultaneously along with the aesthetic surgery. Aesthetic surgery can improve the shape, size, and general appearance of the nose. When performing aesthetic surgery, the operating surgeon’s first priority is to clarify the patient’s general purpose in electing to have aesthetic surgery. To satisfy one’s friends, family, spouse, etc. are all unacceptable. Nor is the surgeon’s eye the ultimate test—for it is the patient, rather than the surgeon, who is the real judge and jury. Often the patient with a poor self image regarding their nasal anatomy may never be satisfied, or happy, with the results of a perfect operation.

The goal of rhinoplasty is to make the changes to the nose look natural and achieve a harmonious balance with other facial features. This surgery can re-contour the nasal profile, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, and narrow the nasal tip and more. Even the patient’s height and sex are important.

Good candidates for nose correction have any one of the following conditions:

  • A nose that appears too large or too small for the face.
  • A bump, or dent, on the nasal bridge when viewed in profile.
  • A nose that seems too wide when viewed from the front.
  • The tip of the nose droops or plunges, or is thickened or enlarged.
  • Nostrils that are excessively flared.
  • A nose is off-center or crooked.
  • Previous injury to the nose has made it asymmetrical.
  • Difficulty breathing due to a structural defect.
