PE TUBE & T-TUBE PLACEMENT

Pre/Post Operative Instructions

Placement of PE tubes is a relatively simple procedure and usually causes very few problems. The most common problem is pain, which is uncommon, and may be treated with Tylenol.

Occasionally there is some slight bleeding. This usually does not last long and occurs immediately after surgery and requires no treatment other than placing a small piece of dry, clean cotton in the ear to protect clothing.

The operation is performed under a general anesthetic with a mask. Upon awakening, your child may experience nausea, drowsiness, or both. This is normal and should resolve in a few hours. Keep your child indoors and quite. Give clear liquids only until nausea subsides. If an adult, relax and do nothing strenuous.

Although tubes are in place, ear infections can occur and need to be treated. The patient does not need to wear ear plugs while bathing or showering, but should wear ear plugs when swimming in lakes, ponds, or the gulf water.

If you have any questions please call the office at the number above. For after hour emergencies, call the same number and the answering service will contact Dr. Daube or the physician on call if Dr. Daube is not available.

Please be aware of the following precautions while your child has tubes in their ears:

  • Ear plugs are not necessary while bathing or in a swimming pool
  • ear plugs are recommended while swimming in the Bay, Gulf or fresh water
  • If you notice drainage from the ear, you may begin using ear drops until you can get in with your pediatrician or primary care provider (PCP)
  • Have the tubes checked at least every three months by your pediatrician or PCP for as long as they are in the ears
  • IF THE TUBES ARE STILL IN THE EAR 18 MONTHS FROM THE TIME THEY WERE PLACED, YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO BE SEEN BY THIS OFFICE. There is a greater risk of the tubes leaving a permanent hole in the eardrum if left for two years or more.
  • You will need to obtain a referral from your PCP to be seen by this office at that time. It is your responsibility to obtain this referral.
