TYMPANOPLASTY/MASTOIDECTOMY
Pre/Post Operative Instructions

General Instructions
- DIET: After surgery, have only liquids for
the rest of the day. Advance to regular diet on post operative
day one or two as tolerated.
- Take medication as directed for pain
- Do not take the bandage off or get it wet
- Bandage is to be removed about 48 hours after
surgery. Gently wash the wound then apply antibacterial ointment.
- After three weeks, begin ear drops as instructed.
Keep follow-up appointment at four weeks.
- Avoid lifting anything weighing over fifteen
pounds. Do not blow your nose, fly in an airplane, or swim. Sneeze
with your mouth open.
Normal Problems
- Slight dizziness or unsteadiness with or without
nausea may occur. Call the physician if dizziness or vomiting
are disabling or last more than 24 hours.
- Thin, bloody drainage from the ear should lessen
and stop within a few days
- Packing and/or scabs may fall from ear canal.
Do not replace packing or place anything in the ear.
- Hearing may be decreased due to packing.
Abnormal Problems
- Fever of greater than 101 degrees F (38.5 C) which
does not respond to Tylenol and fluids.
- Foul odor or pus coming from the ear.
- If excessive bleeding should occur call the office
immediately.
If you have any questions or concerns call the office
at the number above. For after-hour emergencies call the same number
and the answering service will contact Dr. Daube or the physician
on call should Dr. Daube be unavailable.
